Example stimuli used to study the readability of text on textured
backgrounds.
We used 6 background textures and three text contrast levels.
Backgrounds:
- a periodic texture
- a plain "texture" of equal luminance
- four filtered textures (Band 1, Band 2, Band 3, Band 4)
Text contrast:
- black text (95% contrast)
- dark grey text (35% contrast)
- medium grey text (15% contrast)

Click on the combination described below in order to
view an example of that text/background combination. *Note that two
of these were considered unreadable, so they were not included in the
readability experiment, although we include them here for
illustrative purposes. Each of these does have a target word inserted
into the middle paragraph of text. Some text/target word examples are
identical in target word placement for these examples. In the actual
experiment there were no trials which had identical text / target
word placements.
